Linseed oil is the essential medium for oil painting. Gamblin’s Refined Linseed Oil is pressed from American flaxseed and has the palest, purest formulation possible. This highly refined oil can be used to modify oil colors or to make your own paints from raw pigment.
The traditional way to use linseed oil as a painting medium is to mix it with solvent (like Gamblin’s Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits) in various proportions. Start with mostly solvent, then add more oil as you add layers to the painting. This technique, called “fat over lean,” allows you to create a stable paint film that won’t crack or sag.
